In a weekly series called ‘Academy Loan Watch’, I’ll be reviewing the performances of all our players out on loan for that week, if you missed the previous episode of Academy Loan Watch then be sure to read it by browsing through the TBT website. The aim of this series is to keep Liverpool fans interested in the players who are not at the club at this current time, but still are in the clubs’ records.
The day arrived for Conor Coady to play at Wembley when he started for loan side Sheffield United in their FA Cup Semi-Final against Hull. Unfortunately, the Blades lost an 8 goal thriller 5-3 but Coady should be proud with his 90 minute display. 11th placed Sheffield United are next back in action when they host Stevenage on Good Friday.
Michael Ngoo had a strong game for his loan side Walsall even though they lost 1-0n at home to Bristol City. Ngoo had a chance to score in the 7th minute but his header missed the target. He then picked up his first caution for the League One side before coming into the game a bit more. Ngoo then won a penalty for Walsall but Sam Mantom’s penalty kick was saved. The striker was then substituted for Amadou Bakayoko in the 67th minute of the match. Walsall next travel to Carlisle on Good Friday, but it is unlikely Ngoo will play as he hasn’t scored in 10 games for Walsall.
Czech Republic youth defender Jakub Sokolik again played the full 90 minutes for Southend but he couldn’t prevent his side suffering a rare defeat to AFC Wimbledon. Sokolik has been influential for the League Two side helping Southend keep 4 clean sheets in 6 games, but unfortunately this was a game where they didn’t keep a clean sheet. 6th placed Southend next travel to 2nd placed Rochdale in a crunch game on Good Friday.
Young left-back Jack Robinson again played another 90 minutes for loan side Blackpool as they slumped to yet another defeat when they lost 2-0 to Leeds. Robinson did start well with a fierce shot that was blocked. However, Blackpool went ever closer to the relegation zone. It doesn’t get any easier for Blackpool next as they host a Burnley side who can confirm promotion to the Premier League if they beat the Seasiders.
England Under 21 captain Andre Wisdom again played another 90 minutes for promotion chasing Derby County as they comfortably beat Huddlesfield 3-1. Wisdom had a quiet game but he did set up a chance for Jamie Ward in the closing stages, but the striker couldn’t connect to his cross as Derby picked up another win. Derby are next in action against 19th placed Doncaster on Good Friday, and their opponents lie just 3 points above the drop zone.
Northern Irish full-back Ryan McLaughlin had a lively 90 minutes for struggling Barnsley as they lost 1-0 to Bolton. McLaughlin played on the wing at the Reebok at did well, creating two chances as well as having a couple of shots. The main talking point is when McLaughlin won a penalty but like Ngoo at Walsall, the penalty taker missed the penalty as his loan side went down to a 1-0 defeat.
He then continued his good form when they were back in action three days later, as they beat Charlton 2-1 at the Valley. It was a slightly quieter 90 minutes for the winger, but he did create two chances like on Saturday but this time he only had one chance.
His Barnsley side are next back in action when they host Leeds, who are in a struggle themselves lying 16th in the Championship and McLaughlin is expected to play another 90 minutes for Danny Wilson’s side.
Hungarian midfielder Krisztian Adorjan played 89 minutes for his loan side Groningen on Friday night as they beat NAC Breda 2-1 at home. Groningen now have a mini-break and the 8th placed side in the Eredivisie are next back in action on Sunday 27th April when they travel to Roda JC in the penultimate game of the season. Adorjan is expected to play some part in that game.
Spain Under 21 starlet Suso was not in the match day squad for loan side Almeria as they heavily lost 4-0 to La Liga giants and Copa Del Rey winners Real Madrid. 19th placed Almeria are struggling and they next play 14th placed Celta Vigo in a huge game in their season. Suso should return to their squad if they are to have any chance of staying up.
After being out for a few weeks with injury, Liverpool Under 21 defender Tiago Ilori returned to Granada’s startling line-up as they recorded a historic win against Barcelona. After going ahead, Ilori and his fellow defenders were up against it, and the Portuguese defender did extremely well to keep a clean sheet and put in a few heroic blocks to seal all 3 points.
