Hello and Welcome to Kirkby Revisited, a show where I review all the latest news from Liverpool’s Academy from the past week. Some reviews may be long, some reviews may be short, it all depends on what has happened in that week.
Liverpool Release Seven
It is that time of the year again where teams start releasing their players and this is no different for Liverpool, as they release seven players from their squad. Goalkeeper Yusuf Mersin, defenders Jakub Sokolik and Stephen Sama as well as midfielders Craig Roddan and Yalany Baio were among those released. The other players released were forwards Villyan Bijev and Michael Ngoo. The only players who are to immediately move are Sama and Sokolik, who are likely to be joining VFL Bochum and Southend United respectively.
Academy starlets pen new deals
In addition to players leaving the club, there are also players who are deservedly given new deals after their efforts in the 2013/14 season and there are 4 players from Liverpool’s Academy who have stood out in terms of signing these deals. Firstly, goalkeeper Ryan Crump and left-back Joe Maguire have had their contract’s extended whilst central defenders Jordan Williams and Daniel Cleary have been offered new deals.
Phillips signs scholarship
16 year old midfielder Adam Phillips has signed a scholarship with the club and becomes a first year scholar. The central midfielder, who has been instrumental for the Under 18s this season has been rewarded for his efforts. The England Under 16 international will be key for the Under 18s next season as well.
Under 21 youngster makes international debut
Liverpool Under 21 right-back Ryan McLaughlin made his debut for his country Northern Ireland and made his debut in a very key game against Uruguay, where he came up against the likes of Edison Cavani, Diego Forlan and Christian Rodriguez in the 1-0 defeat.
Former Academy star signs after 17 year break
At the age of 15 when he released by Liverpool, Rickie Lambert thought the chance of playing for his boyhood club had gone, but after a 17 career with Southport, Bristol Rovers, Macclesfield and Southampton, the England international sealed a switch to Merseyside club.
