Christian Dean was one of three known trialists in Liverpool Under 21s recent 2-0 victory against Birmingham City. The other trialists were Vancouver Whitecaps’ Sam Adekugbe and Club Brugge’s Emmanuel Oti Essigba.
Dean, 21, plays with Adekugbe at Canadian side Vancouver Whitecaps where he makes his trade as a left sided centre-back. The defender has always played football in North America, where he featured for three teams, including Palo Alto Football Club in his native California.
He was picked up in the National Academy for Western USA soon after and won the National High School Cup with the New York Red Bulls in 2010. Following this, the defender had three seasons with the California Golden Bears, where he made 55 appearances and starting in every single one of them. During his time at college, he won first team honours in the form of the All Pac-12 and the NSCAA Far West Region after helping the Bears finish in the top eight. In the process, Dean led a defence that kept eight clean sheets.
In January 2014, Dean was drafted into the Vancouver side in the MLS SuperDraft. He has since gone on to make just four appearances for his current side, and made his debut when he came on as a late substitute in a 1-1 draw with Chivas USA in March. However, Dean has found himself back in the Under 23 side, where he has just made the one appearance thus far.
Like, Essigba, Dean has international experience and did train with a United States Under 20 side in 2012 before making his only appearance for the Under 23 side this year. If he is to join Liverpool, he will be alongside fellow American Marc Pelosi.
