Harry Wilson was again on target for Liverpool Under 18s, but his goal wasn’t enough as Neil Critchley’s side were beaten 3-2 at Manchester City. The home side raced into a 3-0 lead, but Liverpool responded well to set up a tense final few minutes. However, Wilson’s strike and Wade Maxwell’s goal was only to be a consolation for the men in red.

It took Manchester City all of two minutes to move ahead when Zackarias Faour gave the hosts the lead. Swedish striker Faour then netted another two goals as the Reds were on course for a hammering at City’s new training facilities with just 30 minutes on the clocj.

Maxwell reduced the deficit with a neat finish shortly before half-time. Wilson clawed it back to 3-2 after the interval but despite this late comeback and solid second half performance, the Reds couldn’t salvage any points, which had been lost in the first half.

After the game, Liverpool manager Neil Critchley was impressed with the character and team spirit his side showed, especially after being 3-0 down. He told www.liverpoolfc.com: “We responded really well and put a lot of effort into it and were very unfortunate not to get the equaliser.”

Liverpool XI: Fulton; Whelan, Hart, Brewitt, Lewis, Travis; Alexander, Maxwell, Ejaria; Marsh, Wilson.

Man City XI: Albinson; Tattum, Adarabioyo, Humphreys, Wood; Kongolo, Garcia, Boadu, Fernandes; Nemane, Faour.

Liverpool Under 18s are next back in action on 30 January, when they host Birmingham City in the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup.
