Joe Gomez has been heavily linked with a move to Premier League side Liverpool. The versatile defender, 18, has impressed in the Championship this season for the Addicks. It is understood that Liverpool face competition for his signature, with Manchester City, Arsenal and Aston Villa also keen.

Gomez, who can play at centre-back and right-back, has been another top starlet to have represented his country at youth level. The Englishman has been capped at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-19 level and he has been tipped to be a regular for the Under-20s and Under-21s side. It is understood that Liverpool could offer a deal in the region of £3.5m plus add-ons. However, Charlton are holding out for around £8m for Gomez’s signature, because they want him registered as a Charlton player for another season, at a club where he’s been since 2010. . The reason being is because they feel his development is best suited with the Championship side for the moment.
If he does move to Merseyside, it is very likely that he could return to the Valley but on a loan deal next season. It will see him return to the club where he made 24 appearances in England’s second tier this season.
They do face strong competition from Arsenal, who have had a history with doing deals with Charlton. The Gunners’ right-back Carl Jenkinson moved across London after playing for Charlton, and defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin enjoyed a loan spell there last season. However, Liverpool do lead the race at the moment and the Reds need defensive options at the back, with Andre Wisdom and Lloyd Jones they only two people coming through the Academy at Kirkby.
