Liverpool’s latest signing Joe Gomez has been linked with a loan move to Derby County. Gomez, 18, became the Reds’ fourth summer signing when he joined from Championship side Charlton. BBC Sport understands that he could be back playing in England’s second tier, with Paul Clement’s side keen.
Gomez is a versatile defender, and can play at either centre-back or right-back, signed for the Reds for £3.5m. The England Under-19 international made 24 appearances in the Championship last season, and will be looking to get even more minutes this time around.
If he does join the Rams, it will be third loan signing that has come from Liverpool, after Gomez’s England team-mate Jordon Ibe and Andrew Wisdom spent some time with Derby in the last few seasons. It will also see Gomez be managed by former Real Madrid assistant manager Paul Clement, and his development will be in safe hands under him.
Derby recently signed Northern Ireland international Chris Baird, so it will be interesting to see how Gomez will fit into the Derby side next season if he joins. It is likely that if that happens, Gomez and Baird will be fighting for one position, as both can play in the same two positions on the Derby backline.
