Lawrence Vigouroux is set to leave Liverpool and join League One side Swindon Town on a season-long loan deal. The goalkeeper, 21, has been a regular for the Reds’ U21 side after joining from Tottenham in July 2014. Vigouroux has attracted interest from the Robins after impressing on trial and could replace Wes Foderingham as the club’s number one according to local reports, after he joined Rangers in the summer.
Vigouroux has already been on one loan spell in his career, but that was when he was at Spurs. He spent a month on loan at Hyde in the Conference and conceded 30 goals in 12 games, but that record didn’t reflect his performances. His spell in the fifth tier of English football dampened his stats, but in 22 U21 Premier League games, Vigouroux has conceded just 25 goals keeping 8 clean sheets.
The Chilean featured for Swindon in their 4-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion and impressed Swindon manager Mark Cooper. Reflecting on his performance, Cooper hinted that he suited the requirements and that any deal would be a loan only. He told flicwiltshire.com: “He did well in the second-half today. He commanded his box, he looked as though he could play the ball out with his feet, so it’s one that we are looking at. I would have thought if he comes in it will be a loan, but it is good of Liverpool to let him come so we can have a look at him.”
If he moves to the County Ground, Vigouroux will link up with Liverpool U21 team-mates Jordan Williams and Kevin Stewart, who joined the club on loan last month. He will also link up with former Liverpool U21 goalkeeper Tyrell Belford, who was released from the Reds in 2013. The move will not affect any potential deal for Liverpool starlet Ryan Kent, as a club is allowed to loan four players from one club, but it is looking increasingly likely that Kent will go to the Championship, with MK Dons linked.
