Rafael Paez has left Liverpool to join Spanish side AD Alcorcon on a permanent basis. The Spaniard, 20, joined the Reds from Real Madrid after his release in 2013. The central defender made one first-team appearance for Liverpool in June 2014 but failed to make an impact ever since.

While at Liverpool, Paez had a few loan spells abroad. In 2014/15, he joined Serie ‘B’ side Bologna in their first season back in Italian football’s second tier. Overall he made eight appearances for Delio Rossi’s side as the Rossoblu earned promotion back to Serie ‘A’ at the first attempt. After six months in Italy, he returned to Spain and joined La Liga side Eibar in January 2015. However, after he looked certain to replace Raul Albentosa, FIFA blocked the transfer following an administrative error from the Spanish club. Although he didn’t feature in any of their La Liga games, Paez was still free to train with the club.

Despite having these loan spells, the defender still made 15 Barclays U21 Premier Appearances, scoring twice. In the previous season, Paez featured for the first time in the Reds’ 4-0 win over League of Ireland side Shamrock Rovers. With Paez returning to Spain, it leaves Michael Beale’s Liverpool U21 short of options in defence. Lloyd Jones and Kevin Stewart have already been sent out on loan and now Paez gone, it looks likely that Beale will rely on some of the U18s players to fill the void.
