Connor Randall scored his first goal of the season as Liverpool U21s drew 1-1 with Swansea City in a friendly at the Kirkby Academy on Sunday afternoon. Randall, who has been in the first-team squad in the Europa League this season, opened the scoring in the 51st minute. However, Swansea responded and found an equaliser in the 73rd minute when Liverpool failed to clear a corner and Botti Biabi was there to score his first Swansea goal since signing from Falkirk in the summer. Liverpool manager Michael Beale fielded Jose Enrique and Joao Teixeira as they look to gain match fitness, but also fielded youngsters Matthew Virtue and Kirstof Polgar.
Although the spoils were shared, the game was dominated by the home side. Liverpool had numerous chances in front of goal, and were unlucky not to score more than one goal. There were positive performances from captain Jose Enrique and Joao Teixeira, who will be looking to get back into the first team in the next few weeks. Harry Wilson returned to Liverpool to get some match fitness and could’ve won it for his side. The youngster, currently on loan at Crewe, had two chances in the closing stages but the Swansea goalkeeper had to be at his best to deny him.
After conceding the equaliser, Liverpool responded well and created more chances on goal. Jerome Sinclair couldn’t carry on his impressive form in front of goal, and his chance was spurned. There was also opportunities for midfielders Will Marsh and Teixeira, but both couldn’t convert them when it mattered.
Liverpool U21s are next back in action after the international break when they travel to Sunderland on Sunday 18 October.
