Neil Critchley’s Liverpool U18s will face Championship side Ipswich Town in the third round of the FA Youth Cup. The Reds, who won the tournament in 2007, are currently third in the Barclays Under 18 Premier League. The date and time of the fixture is yet to be confirmed, but it will be a home tie for the Reds, either at the Deva Stadium or Anfield.
Liverpool are three time winners of the competitions, with their last title coming in the 2006/07 season, when they beat arch rivals Man United at Old Trafford. Despite having a highly talented squad, Liverpool only reached the fifth round of the tournament last season, as they suffered a 3-2 defeat to Birmingham in extra-time. Ovie Ejaria and Jerome Sinclair scored in that tie back in January.
Ipswich are also three-time winners of the tournament, with their most recent cup success coming in the 2004/05 season. The Tractor Boys reached the fourth round of the tournament last season after a penalty shoot-out success over Colchester in the third round sealed their progress. Their journey then came to an abrupt end when they lost 3-1 to Premier League side Sunderland.
It will also be the first time the two sides will have met in this competition since the 2005/06 season. That tie was in the fourth round of the competition, with Liverpool winning 2-1, thanks to a goal from former Ipswich midfielder Paul Anderson.
