Owen Wheeler is reportedly to be on a six-week trial at Wolves U18 from Premier League side Liverpool. The goalkeeper, 17, has been with the Reds’ academy since 2012 and has been a regular figure in Neil Critchley’s U18 side this season. However, with the additions of Caoimhin Kelleher and now Kamil Grabara, there is plenty of competition for one goalkeeping slot in the U18s this season.

Wheeler has struggled for game time for the U18s this season, with Shamal George being preferred as Neil Critchley’s first choice goalkeeper this season. After playing all of the Reds’ pre-season games, the shot-stopper has made just two Premier League appearances this season and will temporarily feature for Wolves in the coming months. He initially played for Wolves on Saturday 28 November, when they thrashed high-flyers Everton 8-0. He then featured for the Midlands-based side in yesterday’s game with Stoke City, which was the start of his trial.

Interestingly, Liverpool face Wolves in three weeks’ time at the Sir Jack Hayward training ground, with it being unclear whether Wheeler will face his parent club. With Liverpool already bringing in one goalkeeper this transfer window, could we see the departure of another?
