Sergi Canos has been called up to the Spain U19 squad for the first time for a friendly against Italy on 20 January. The Liverpool winger, 18, is currently on a season long-loan at Championship side Brentford after joining in September, and has scored three goals in 18 appearances. After representing Spain at U16 and U17 levels, Canos returns to international football where he has a chance of making his U19s debut for Luis de la Fuente’s side.
Canos’ first taste of international football came for the U16s in March 2013, where he went on to make two appearances for his national side. However, that was because Canos made his U17s debut just six months later. He played in both international friendlies and European Championship qualifiers for his country, and made seven appearances scoring twice.
After spending some time playing U21 football with Liverpool, he was overlooked, but after a strong start to the season in England’s second tier, he has caught the eye again. His call-up to the national side comes just two weeks after the Spaniard scored one of his three goals with an impressive solo effort in their win at Reading on 28 December. In addition, the former Barcelona youngster has also provided one assist for Dean Smith’s side, that coming in Brentford’s 2-1 win over Preston back in September 2015.
He will be looking to kick on this season both domestically and internationally as he aims for break into Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side in the coming years.
