Samuel Bastien is reportedly being tracked by Premier League side Liverpool, who face competition from Juventus for his signature. The midfielder, 19, is currently on-loan at Serie ‘B’ side Avellino from Belgian Pro-League side Anderlecht. After impressing with his loan side, Bastien has attracted interest from several clubs, including Liverpool and Juventus as they battle over the youngster.
Bastien progressed through the youth ranks at several different clubs in Belgian including RFC Meux and UR Namur before joining Standard Liege. From there, he moved to Anderlecht, where he developed through to the first team. The midfielder made his one and only appearance for Anderlecht thus far in December 2014, when he came as as an 80th minute substitute in their 4-1 win against KRC Mechelen.
He stayed with the Belgian giants’ youth setup for the duration of the 2014/15 season, but at the start of the new season, he was loaned out to Avellino. He has since made 18 appearances, scoring twice, with his last goal coming in a 2-1 win at Cesena in December 2015. After joining the Serie ‘B’ side in August, he made his debut for his new side against Modena FC in September 2015. His first goal for Avellino came in October of that year, when he scored in their dramatic 3-3 draw at home to Brescia. Despite starting in 13 of his 18 appearances, Bastien has only completed the full 90 minutes just twice this season.
He has also featured twice for for his country at youth level. His first and only call-up for Belgium U19 came in October 2014. He made his debut in his side’s 4-0 win against Luxembourg, where he featured for the full 90 minutes. His next and only other appearance came five days later, where he played 63 minutes in the 4-2 defeat by England.
His progress will be closely monitored by Liverpool, but due to playing in Italy, he has caught the eye of Serie ‘A’ giants Juventus, who are also reported to be very keen on the midfielder. Liverpool may look to the transfer market in the summer after a disappointing season where they currently sit eighth in the Barclays Premier League, having picked up 34 points in 24 games. Jurgen Klopp’s side have already brought in Marko Grujic for £5.1m this season, but could the Reds bring another 19-year-old midfielder?
