Sheyi Ojo scored a 93rd minute winner as ten-man Liverpool U21s came from behind to beat Middlesbrough 2-1 in the Barclays U21 Premier League on Thursday evening. Arnel Jakupovic put the visitors ahead in the 34th minute of the game with a free-kick, but Ojo equalised eight minutes after half-time with his first U21 goal of the season. The winger, who had a loan spell at Wolves earlier in the season, won it for Michael Beale’s side with virtually the last kick of the game from the penalty spot.
Beale fielded a strong side for the game at the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium, with Jon Flanagan, Tiago Ilori, Jose Enrique and Adam Bogdan all in the starting XI. The Reds had to thank their Hungarian goalkeeper in the 28th minute of the game, when he saved a penalty from Jones. However, Jones had a huge part to play in the opening goal six minutes later. Cameron Brannagan was shown a straight red for a foul on the Middlesbrough midfielder, and Jakupovic scored directly from the free-kick to put his side ahead.
Ojo then responded in the 53rd minute, cutting in off the left wing and curling an effort past Middlesbrough goalkeeper Joe Fryer to level proceedings. The England U19 youth international then won it for the Reds in dramatic style in the 93rd minute of the game. Second half substitute Brooks Lennon was brought down in the penalty area, and the winger won it for Liverpool in the dying seconds to give them a valuable victory.
Liverpool rise to eighth in the U21s Premier League and return to Chester on Sunday when they host second-placed Sunderland. Kick-Off is at 12pm.
Liverpool XI: Bogdan; Flanagan, Ilori, Maguire, Enrique; O’Hanlon, Brannagan; McLaughlin (Virtue (Gomes)), Kent, Ojo; Sinclair (Lennon).
