Sergi Canos has been called up to the Spain U19s squad for their friendly against Serbia next month. The winger, 18, is currently on a season long loan at Championship side Brentford from Premier League side Liverpool. After impressing for Dean Smith’s side, he receives his second call-up for his national side in their friendly with Serbia on 2 March.
Canos scored once for the Reds’ U21 side before joining Brentford on an initial short-term loan in August. However after his performances made him a fan favourite, the Spaniard extended his loan spell until the end of the season. The winger made 25 appearances for the Bees, starting just nine of the games and is yet to play 90 minutes in the Championship this season. However, in those nine starts, Canos has got four goals and two assists, including a goal and an assist in Brentford’s 3-0 win against Wolves on Tuesday.
Canos has represented Spain at U15, U16 and U17 level before his U19 call-up last month. He made his debut for Luis Fuente’s side in January 2016, where he played 45 minutes in their 2-1 defeat to Italy in Lepe. Spain are currently preparing for the UEFA U19 European Championships between 24 and 29 March. They are in the group with England, Greece and Georgia and will be looking to retain their title, and Canos is edging closer to being part of their plans.
