Marcus Rashford scored a brace on his Premier League for Manchester United in their 3-2 victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday, The striker, 18, broke into Louis Van Gaal’s side with another double in the Europa League win over FC Midtyland, when he replaced the injured Anthony Martial in the starting line-up. However, after scoring 13 goals for their U18s last season, does Liverpool have their own Marcus Rashford in the form of Toni Gomes, who has a similar record to the United starlet?

Gomes joined the club in January 2015, and played for the Reds’ U17 side during the Frenz International Cup in Indonesia. Current Liverpool U21 midfielder Allan also featured in this tournament, but for Brazilian side Internacional, and his performances led to his arrival to Merseyside. Gomes then began his first season at U18 level this season, and has made a big impact at the Kirkby Academy this season.

In just 17 starts for the U18s this season, he has already scored 12 goals, and with six games in the Premier League play-offs left to play, there is a good chance that the Portuguese youngster may better Rashford’s goal tally. Amongst this, Gomes has scored two hat-tricks this season, with the latest coming in Neil Critchley’s sides 5-0 victory against Sunderland on 23 February after scoring three in the 4-3 win against Middlesbrough earlier in the season.

The youngster has also made the step up to U21 level this season making his debut in the 1-0 defeat at Sunderland in October 2015. He made his first start for Michael Beale’s side five days later, featuring for 61 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Spurs. Gomes is also a Portugal U17 international.

With the departure of Christian Benteke looking likely in the summer, and with Daniel Sturridge’s injury record looking bleak, Gomes may be given a chance to prove what he could do in the Premier League in years to come.
