Sergio Gomez is the latest La Masia youngster to be linked with a move to Premier League side Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp’s side have already signed Sergi Canos and Bobby Adekanye from the Barcelona academy in recent seasons, with Canos thriving on loan at Brentford. It is now being reported by Spanish publication Marca that Gomez, 15, is attracting interest from Liverpool, who watched the youngster earlier this year.
It was Gomez’s pace and skill that caught the eye of Liverpool scouts, as they were impressed when a Barcelona youth team played Liverpool in a friendly which the Catalan side won 4-3. However, the Reds cannot sign Gomez until he turns 16 in September, but will be hoping he can sign a pre-contract agreement, which will allow to join on his birthday. Liverpool have done this in the past with Canos and Adekanye, as well as bringing in Pedro Chirivella from Valencia, and he has since gone on to make his first-team debut. Despite having an injury-hit first season with the Reds, winger Adekanye has impressed when he has played, scoring for both the U21s and U18s.

La Liga giants Barcelona also cannot officially keep hold of the player until he is older, and will be hoping his attachment to Catalunya will persuade him to stay. It is understood that Liverpool can offer him a ‘blank cheque’ which may tempt Gomez to move to Merseyside rather than develop at La Masia.

Liverpool’s academy have produced 15 players for the first-team in recent years, with the likes of Cameron Brannagan, Jerome Sinclair and Chirivella breaking through. They say good things come in threes, so after securing the services of both Canos and Adekanye, will Liverpool complete a La Masia trio by signing Gomez?
