Liverpool Academy had another busy week with three fixtures overall, but both the U21s and the U18s suffered defeats. The U21s were thrashed by Southampton after being knocked out of the U21 Premier Cup by West Ham whilst the U18s made it back-to-back defeats in the Premier League play-offs. There was a new contract for an exciting defender whilst a Brazilian midfielder could be going out on loan again. Here’s this week’s Academy Round Up.

Liverpool U21s Thrashed By Southampton
Liverpool U21s were back in action on Sunday when they hosted Southampton, and just like the first-team hours before them, they suffered another defeat, losing 5-0. It was their second defeat in a week, and the defeat sees Michael Beale’s side slip to ninth in the U21 Premier League, seven points clear of the drop zone.

Liverpool U18s Suffer Heavy Defeat To Reading
Yan Dhanda got on the scoresheet, but Liverpool U18s suffered a 4-1 thrashing by Reading at the Kirkby Academy on Saturday afternoon. The striker, who signed his first professional contract this season, opened the scoring in the second minute. The Reds then spurned a handful of chances before Reading equalised shortly after half-time through Sam Smith before Tyler Frost completed the turnaround five minutes later. Smith made it 3-1 from the penalty spot before Conor Davis capitalised on a mistake to seal the victory. It is now three straight defeats for Neil Critchley’s side.

Liverpool U21s Crash Out Of U21 Premier Cup
Sheyi Ojo scored his sixth goal of the season, but that wasn’t enough as Liverpool lost 3-2 to West Ham in a clash where both sides ended the game with ten men. Pedro Chirivella opened the scoring for the visitors, before Doneil Henry equalised shortly after half-time. After the game went into extra-time, Michael Browne put West Ham ahead, before Ojo looked to have sent the game into penalties when he equalised five minutes later. However, Stephen Hendrie won it moments later as both Martin Skrtel and Browne were sent off.

Liverpool U21 Midfielder Allan Linked With Loan Move To Mainz
Allan is the latest Liverpool youngster to be linked with a move away from the club. The midfielder is currently out on loan at Sint-Truidense, and will be granted a work permit when he returns to Melwood. Despite being eligible to play next season, the Brazil U20 international has been linked with a move to the Bundesliga, with Mainz keen on securing the services of the midfielder.

Liverpool Defender Corey Whelan Signs Professional Contract
Corey Whelan has signed first professional contract with Liverpool. The defender, 18, joined the Reds from Crewe Alexandra as an U10 and has since gone on to appear for the U18s and more recently the U21s. After making the step up to reserve football this season, the Republic Of Ireland youth international puts pen to paper on a new deal.
