Jake Brimmer was on target as Liverpool U21s came from behind to begin their 2016/17 season with a 1-1 draw at Bundesliga 3 side Sonnerhof on Saturday afternoon. The hosts, who were competing in their fifth pre-season game, took the lead in just the first minute of the game courtesy of Austrian winger Fabian Miesenbock. Brimmer, 18, then grabbed the equaliser just after the hour mark with a volley following good work from Brooks Lennon and defender Joe Maguire.
Sonnerhof started off the much brighter side and got an early goal as Liverpool struggled to adapt to the physicality of the German side, who finished seventh last season.
Jack Dunn inspired his side to grow back into the game, creating a couple of chances before Brimmer fired beyond David Yelldell in the Sonnerhof goal.
U18 regulars Herbie Kane and Bobby Adekanye both created chances on their step up to U21s football, but neither could convert their chances against a more experienced side with an average age of 26.
Either side could not find a winner as Michael Beale’s side start their new season with a well-deserved against a very physical side who are further into their pre-season preparations.
The U21s will continue their pre-season tour of Germany when they travel to second division side FC Erzgebirge on 20 July before facing Rhyl in Wales four days later.
