Toni Gomes and Conor Masterson made scored their first goals of the season as Liverpool U18s came from 1-0 down to beat Newcastle 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. After going behind in the opening five minutes, Neil Critchey’s side drew the tie level a minute after the interval courtesy of Glen McAuley, who netted his fourth goal in three games. Ireland U19 defender Masterson then headed Dhanda’s free-kick in the back of the net to complete the comeback, before Gomes opened his account with Liverpool’s third late on.
U18s Head Coach Critchley made three changes from the side that lost 4-1 to Everton last week as Abdi Sharif made his debut, whilst Kamil Grabara and McAuley also returned to the side.
Adam Lewis remarkably kept his place in the side just a week after he was stretchered off with what looked like a serious leg injury, but Rhian Brewster was on international duty.
Diego Lattie replaced Sharif in the 81st minute of the match to make his debut at U18 level since joining from Manchester City on a three-year deal earlier in the season.
After bagging his third goal of the season last weekend, Dhanda turned provider for McAuley’s equaliser and his free-kick set up Masterson to turn the game on its head.
The forward then claimed a hat-trick of assists when he played a through ball for Gomes to latch onto and score his first goal for the U18s in his fifth game.
The victory sees Liverpool remain in fifth in the U18 Premier League and move to within three points of leaders Manchester United.
Due to the international break, Liverpool take a break from competitive football when they face Southampton, who are sixth in the South Division.
