Liam Millar was on target but Liverpool U18s saw their 13 game unbeaten run in the U18s Premier League come to an end on Saturday, losing 2-1 at bottom side Sunderland.

Head Coach Neil Critchley made just one change from the team that drew 2-2 at home to West Bromwich Albion with Ben Williams replacing Caoimhin Kelleher in goal.

Liverpool started the brighter of the two sides, and were rewarded as Millar put the visitors ahead in the opening stages with a neat finish for his second goal in his last three games.

The striker will now join up with the Canada U20s squad for the 2017 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship which runs from 17 February to 5 March.

However, Liverpool’s lead was short-lived with Sunderland grabbing the equaliser from a set-piece less than two minutes later at the Academy of Light.

The news went from bad to worse for the young Reds as Sunderland completed the turnaround after Ben Williams spilled a shot for the attacker to tap in.

Critchley brought on Abdi Sharif at half-time in place of Curtis Jones before bringing on Glen McAuley and Luis Longstaff, but Liverpool were unable to find the illusive goal.

One positive to come from the U18s’ final away outing of the season is that there was a debut for exciting winger Longstaff.

The young Reds will look to get back to winning ways next Saturday when they host Wolves in the penultimate game of the regular season.

Liverpool U18s: B Williams; N Williams, R Williams, Johnston, Lewis; Coyle, Jones (Sharif 45′); Simmonds (Longstaff 68′), Dhanda (McAuley 75′), Adekanye; Millar.
